Hi LCSHG, out of 5 ILO HD04s I've upgraded 4 of them with this larger HDD hack found here, http://www.twowheels.force9.co.uk/liteonus.htm . The file includes all the benefits of Mr. Wizard's hack plus the larger HDD hack. That firmware allows you to install a larger HDD, up to 500GB. They all work fine, no issues. Simply install, you might get the HDD error code, no issue, just erase the HDD under "TOOLS" and it will reformat the HDD to its full capacity, no more need to go through the PC route.
I do still have a copy of the bigger than 500GB firmware file for the ILO HD04 and plan to do some more testing with a 1TB Sata HDD. I already have a Sata 500GB fitted with a mini SAtA/IDE convertor in the 5th ILO I have already flashed with the bigger than 500GB HDD file and need to get a 1TB to continue my testing.
As for the "White Magic" upgrade, not sure if the seller is using the PC route or the new HDD hack in his upgrade service. The seller has been providing this service for a number of years already. |

Thanks for the info
The link given reports it can not be addressed to
I notice bithead9 is looking into the use of a SATA DVD drive to use in the liteon 5045.
SATA for the HDD is not a problem. The 5045 and RHD04 are looking for a a drive that it recognizes. If it sees the SATA drive it most likely will have other problems as no FF. but that could permit the HDD use. Not having all functions can be a pain
I doubt a SATA DVD drive will work but have not tried any
While many would welcome a larger HDD I keep The HDD almost clear.
As I replayed to bithead9 a long time ago My real interest is in a 21/2 hour mode for both the 5045 and RHD04 and making the RHD04 an All write -- He indicated it could be done But no reply
I don’t recall the eBay seller offering a larger HDD and/or a firmware upgrade to permit this. --In the past , Only Mr. Wizards Hack. |

It's nice to see you guys are still hanging around here!
Something I would like to find is a way to hook a USB external HDD to a 5045. Now that would be sweet! |

LCSHG, bithead9 is now reporting that he succeeded in putting a SATA Burner in the 5045. He used a mini converter that also had jumper setting pins (set at master) on it which seems to be the key to have the 5045 recognize the burner. He tested out only one burner but reports that it's working (FF, copying HDD to DVD, preparing, erasing). The converter is $18.00, and add the price of the Burner (he used a Liteon iHAS122). I personally look for compatible drives, I just got 2 1635s manufactured May 2008 !?!? for about $45 a piece. I will be testing them out on the weekend in the HD04.
Harpmaker, while I have the HD04 open I will also try removing the HDD and craddle and plug in a USB to SATA/IDE adapter cable with a USB gender changer at the end and try connecting an external USB HDD that way and see if that works. I guess an issue could be the transfer rate on USB, we'll see. |

Thanks CC, that would be great! There are two potential problems I foresee using a external USB drive; the first is the drive would have to be one that is on all the time (many only spin up on demand) and the other is bidirectionality, the IDE/USB connectors and devices I have used are all one-way - I don't know if it was only the gender of the connectors that was at "fault" or if the devices themselves were wired that way. It's kind of hard to explain. I eagerly await your results. |

I tried but no avail. I used a LaCie 500GB to try out and I was also concerned with the power, it would need to be on all the time if using the timer recording feature. I powered up the LaCie just prior to powering up the HD04, it didn't matter, didn't work.
The experiment though left me with the assumption that it might also be a jumper setting issue. Once I plugged and powered up as described above it reacted the same as when I have a bad jumper setting, about a minute on "Hello" compared to the 15 seconds normal boot up but then again I've had the wrong jumper setting on an internal HDD in the past and it still did work though so it might be the bidirectional issue as you pointed out.
The HD04 did recognize that a HDD was there but gave me the HDD error code which I've seen before when installing a raw HDD (not properly formated), so I tried erasing through "tools" and it just stayed on 0% completed for about a minute and then gave me the "Fail" result. When I pressed "timer" capacity was at "0:00". I also tried with the LaCie powered off because I could I guess !!!, it did boot up but same results as above.
On another note the 1635s I got were manufactured in October 2008, not May as I previously indicated, and they were still on an old firmware from 2005 (YSOW). I did update them to the 2006 file (more media, YSOZ). Kinda of weird that they weren't already up to speed.
Seems to have a lot of ifs and buts to contravene to get this to work. I guess your craddle caddy process is still the way to go for an external setup.
The testing was close and it reminded me of the difference between the Clinton government and the Canadian government of the day, "close but no cigar".
Cheers,
CC |
